PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA) HAPPENINGS: 

Because of the inclement weather and school closures this week, RED RIBBON WEEK has been rescheduled for next week, February 3-7.  The purpose of RED RIBBON WEEK is to present a visible commitment to living a safe, healthy, and drug-free life.  This year’s theme is  “A Healthy Me is Drug Free.”  On Monday the students will sign a pledge and receive a red silicone bracelet that says “A Healthy Me is Drug Free” and “Ivy Hill Elementary School.”  Please encourage your children to wear the bracelet and participate all week long:

Monday – Wear Red! Support Red Ribbon Week

Tuesday – “Wild About Being Healthy” Wear animal print, camo or shirt with an animal on it.

Wednesday –  Crazy Hair Day!” You’d be crazy not to live a healthy, drug free life!

Thursday- “I’m Active and Healthy!” Wear your favorite sport/team shirt or colors.

Friday  – “We are Ivy Hill and We Pledge to be Healthy and Drug Free!” – Spirit Wear

FUN FAIR 2014 is next Friday, February 7th!  Wristbands provide unlimited access to as many games as you want to play for the whole night!  Wristbands are $12 each if you pre-order ($15 at the door).  A photo booth, plus cotton candy, popcorn, pizza, hot dogs, chips, candy, and drinks, will be back at Fun Fair this year, too – all for purchase with cash only.  To pre-order wristbands (for the games), use the Fun Fair pre-order form FUNFAIRFLYER.  Due to the school closures this week, the deadline has been extended to Monday, February 3rd.  The other side of the form also offers you the chance to volunteer at Fun Fair and/or donate food items (including soda, water, ice, or a baked item for the cake walk).  MANY volunteers are needed to make Fun Fair a success, so please consider volunteering!   Contact Angie Zitella (zitellaangie@yahoo.com) with any other questions.

BOX TOPS and FUN FAIR are teaming up again this year!  Bring 10 box tops to the office and your family will receive a FREE bag of popcorn at the Fun Fair!  Limit 1 bag of popcorn per family. Be sure to write your name on your bag and turn in your Box Tops by 2/5 to get your FREE popcorn!

BOX TOPS:  VOTE WITH BOX TOPS is back!  Use your BOX TOPS to vote for which FABULOUS prize will be awarded.  The prizes are:

1 – Lunchtime “Jam Session” with Mr. Hengels on drums, Mrs. Opitz on piano, and Mr. Berry on bass guitar!

2 – Football Fun- Mr. Hawk has to dress in Green Bay Packer gear (he is a Bears fan).  Ms. Boston needs to dress up in Bears gear-head to toe (she is a Packers fan)!  Throughout the day, we will incorporate some football fun!

3 – Make a human ice cream sundae! We will have a special school assembly featuring Ms. Boston as the ice cream sundae! The kids can decide on which kind of ice cream and all classes can add their own toppings.

Earn $1000 by 2/28 and Ivy Hill gets all 3!  Check our progress on the puzzle poster in the Commons. Can you figure out what we are going to purchase with the BOX TOPS money?

The All School ROLLER SKATING PARTY is February 13th, 6:30 – 8:30 at Orbit Roller Rink.  This is always a fun night and is a free event sponsored by the PTA.  Mark your calendars and plan to join us!

A final reminder, The FAMILY AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT COMMITTEE will continue to oversee the charity drive for WINGS Program Inc. through January 31st.  WINGS offers invaluable support to homeless and abused women and children.  The committee will continue to collect the following items.
Kindergarten – Baby Wipes
First Grade – Garbage Bags
Second Grade – Toilet Paper
Third Grade – Paper Towels
Fourth Grade – Dish Detergent
Fifth Grade – Diapers, size 3-6

 REFLECTIONS: Congratulations to the following Ivy Hill students.  Their projects for the Reflections Arts Program 2013-2014 have advanced to the District level: Siya Aparanji, Verena Guirguis, Leah Klosterman, Eeshaana Majumdar, Leah Oyen, Anusha Parikh and  Kritin Shukla.  Thank you for representing Ivy Hill and for a job well done!

PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA) HAPPENINGS:

The PTA Meeting on Tuesday, January 7th was canceled due to severe weather.  With the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday this month, we are not able reschedule it.  We hope you can make it to our next meeting Wednesday, February 5th at 7 pm.  Contact PTA Co-Presidents Denise Schreiner (deniseschreiner@sbcglobal.net) or Kara Janus (KMACKJAN@aol.com) with questions.

The ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEE is continuing two recycling programs taking place at Ivy Hill.  We are collecting old holiday string lights for recycling this holiday season.  You can bring them in to school now through Friday, January 17th, 2014.  We are also participating in Crayola ColorCycle.  This program turns Crayola markers into energy and helps kids understand the importance of their role in protecting the environment.  We will be collecting dried out markers in the commons and sending them to a conversion facility where they will be transformed into clean-burning fuel.  This recycling program will be on going until the end of the school year.  Thanks for doing your part to keep these items out of our landfills!  When we all do our own small part, it adds up to a big difference!  If you have any questions about these programs, please contact Leah Robideau (lkrobideau@gmail.com).

The FAMILY AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT COMMITTEE will be organizing a charity drive in January for WINGS Program Inc. from January 13 – January 31.  WINGS helps homeless and abused women and children by offering integrated services that meet their needs for shelter, education, guidance and support.  They provide safe, secure living environments, through transitional housing and emergency shelter, in residential neighborhoods that allow women to go to school, work, and achieve financial and emotional independence.  The committee is requesting the following items based on grade level.
