Join in the Idle Free Zone campaign! The Village of Arlington Heights is currently promoting a community awareness program to encourage drivers to turn off their engines while waiting in areas such as the school. Less idling means less air pollution and less wasted fuel. Did you know that: Idling your car for 10 seconds uses more fuel than turning off the engine and restarting it. In addition, restarting your vehicle does not harm your engine or starter. Please turn off your engine when waiting to drop off or pick up your children from school and extracurricular activities, or when waiting for extended periods in a drive-thru, such as the pharmacy, bank or fast food!

Save the Date – FIELD DAY is Friday, June 1st. More information is coming soon.

Students, families, and school staff from every school in our district are coming together for the 5K and 1 Mile run/walk presented by ABC/25 Foundation and AH Council of PTAs. This Sunday, April 22nd is Earth Day.  Celebrate by doing something friendly for the environment and talking to your children about ways to keep our planet clean!  In honor of Earth Day, the Environmental Committee gave each child a reusable tote bag today at school.   Hopefully they can save some waste by using these bags instead of taking plastic bags at the store!  We also came to the lunchroom today and showed the children some cool cases that were made using recycled Caprisun pouches, so they could see the results of their recycling efforts (and 20 lucky students’ names were picked in a drawing to win the cases).  Thanks to all who participated in Earth Week activities this week!

Getting ready for summer?  Getting rid of the old T-shirts and shorts?  Family & Community Involvement is hosting a “T-Shirt & Shorts” Drive April 23 – 27th for Journeys from PADS to HOPE.  The Journeys from PADS to HOPE organization helps homeless people in the Cook County area.  In the NW Suburbs alone, there are 1,200 homeless people accessing shelters with approximately 400 additional homeless people residing on streets, in cars and throughout forest preserves.  These people can use our help this summer!  They are in need of gently used summer clothing for both children and adults.  Collection boxes can be found in the commons April 23-27th.  THANK YOU in advance!

Did you know that we are recycling Caprisun pouches (as well as any other similar juice pouch) in the Commons?  The children recycle them daily at lunchtime.  We also encourage you to collect them at home and bring them to the Commons for recycling (but please make sure all the juice is gone first and they are not too sticky!).  The pouches are sent to Terracyle, an organization that recycles the pouches.  During Earth Week, we’ll be bringing in some products that Terracycle has made from these pouches for the kids to see an example of what comes from their recycling efforts!  Collection of these juice pouches will end on May 1st.  So bring them in soon!

Do you have any gently-used shoes that you’re looking to clear out of your house?  The Environmental Committee will be hosting a SHOE DRIVE the week of April 30th.  Look for the collection boxes in the Commons beginning Monday, April 30.  The shoes will be donated to Share Your Soles, an organization that brings the shoes to people in impoverished nations around the world.  They request that the shoes be in “good” condition … so only gently used shoes can be donated.

A big thank you to everyone who submitted pictures of their kids at school activities this year!  We couldn’t have made the yearbook without you!  The yearbook has been submitted to the publisher for this year, so we don’t need anymore pictures at this time, but remember to take pictures at field days and submit them for next year!

The Box Top Committee would love to thank all of the families who cheered us on and contributed to our record setting year.  With everyone’s help, we were able to raise an unbelievable $2,441.64!  A special shout out goes to our top ten contributing families!  In no particular order they are Fox, Olejniczak, Snow/Moder(ineligible), Nix, Oyen(ineligible), Nimmo, Boehm, Smith, DeGrazia, and Kalka.  One of these lucky families will win a Box Top prize pack!

We’re celebrating Earth Week next week, April 16 to April 20.  In honor of Earth Week, we encourage you to walk to school and bring a waste-free lunch every day!  Please also join us in the following:

Wear BLUE on Monday, April 16th, to remind us to keep our water clean.  Wear GREEN on Friday, April 20th, to remind us to keep our earth clean An Earth Week project was sent home earlier this week.  It was a sheet of paper with a picture of a flower (which was printed on recycled paper!).  On the sheet, children should state something they’ll do to help the environment and decorate the flower picture.  If your child would like to participate, please have him or her complete the project at home and return it to school.  They are due this Monday, April 16th.  The projects will be hung during Earth Week in the Commons.  All children who participate will be entered into a drawing to win a few Earth-friendly prizes that we’re giving away!  Any questions, contact Suzanne Krause at svkrause@hotmail.com, Lynette Nimmo at net02134@aol.com or Lynn Feder at lynnfeder@hotmail.com.

Pack your camping gear Miss Csensich!  The students and families at Ivy Hill School have officially made you a happy camper!
